Gonzales Catholic Cemetery Guidelines – Revised February 2026
The Gonzales Catholic Cemetery, hereinafter the “Cemetery”, is consecrated ground that is blessed and held sacred by the Catholic Church according to ancient custom. The Cemetery is a place of prayer signifying reverence for the human body and the hope of the resurrection. All burials or other ceremonies within the Cemetery are to be conducted by Catholic clergy.
The Cemetery is open to pedestrian traffic during daylight hours and will remain closed to vehicles except during funerals and holy days of obligation. Use of alcohol, illegal drugs, criminal activity, or repeated violation of the rules contained herein will result in a criminal trespass warning and potential denial of access to the property.
The purchase of a “cemetery deed”, also known as a “gravesite”, grants privilege to the purchaser to bury their loved one in a designated plot in the land within the Cemetery boundary. The land containing all purchased plots remains under the ownership and legal control of the Archdiocese of San Antonio to be managed by the Catholic Community of Gonzales and Waelder.
Restrictions:
- Cemetery is open during daylight hours for prayer & placement of flowers.
- Cemetery is closed to vehicles except during funerals & holy days of obligation.
- Pedestrian access to the Cemetery is available from St. Andrew Street.
- Permitted decorations are limited to flowers; all flowers must be in approved vases. Flowers placed in vases permanently attached to the gravestone or an approved vase, through the Knights of Columbus Vase Program, will remain untouched until they become unsightly.
- Sign up in the parish office for the Knights of Columbus Cemetery Vase Program that helps those who do not have a gravestone with permanently attached flower vases. The Program offers one (1) In-Ground Flush Mount Cemetery Vase for each gravesite. The In-Ground Flush Mount Cemetery Vase must be installed by the Knights of Columbus and is to be centered and 42” from gravestone.
- All other decorations are prohibited & will be removed.
- Planting of shrubs, bushes, or trees is prohibited.
- Curbing is prohibited.
- Gravel, crushed stone, and other groundcover is prohibited.
- Gravestones must be permanent and made of granite or marble and are to not exceed 36” tall by 42” wide by 16” deep. A double gravestone is not to exceed 36” tall by 84” wide by 16” deep. It is recommended to purchase a gravestone with two (2) permanently attached flower vases.
- Gravestones made of any other material, such as cement, metal, or wood are prohibited.
- Military foot stones, made of bronze, granite, or marble, should be placed level with the ground to facilitate mowing of the grass.
- Cemetery management will level the gravesite approximately ninety (90) days after burial and will remove any flowers that are not removed by the family.
- The Catholic Community of Gonzales and Waelder will be responsible for mowing the grass.
- The management of the Catholic Community of Gonzales and Waelder, and church volunteers who help clean the cemetery, reserve the right to remove prohibited decorations. Cemetery clean up days for removal of all existing flowers and prohibited decorations will be held two (2) times a year during the months of March and October. Exact dates will be posted to the website of the Catholic Community of Gonzales and Waelder.

El Cementerio Católico de Gonzales, en adelante el "Cementerio", es un terreno consagrado, bendecido y considerado sagrado por la Iglesia Católica según antiguas costumbres. El Cementerio es un lugar de oración que simboliza la reverencia por el cuerpo humano y la esperanza de la resurrección. Todos los entierros y otras ceremonias dentro del Cementerio deben ser realizados por clérigos católicos.
El Cementerio está abierto al tráfico peatonal durante el día y permanecerá cerrado al tráfico vehicular, excepto durante los funerales y los Días Santo de Obligación. El consumo de alcohol, drogas ilegales, actividad delictiva o la violación reiterada de las normas aquí contenidas dará lugar a una advertencia por intrusión ilegal y a la posible negación del acceso a la propiedad.
La compra de una "escritura de cementerio", también conocida como "sepultura", otorga al comprador el derecho de enterrar a su ser querido en una parcela designada dentro de los límites del Cementerio. El terreno que contiene todas las parcelas adquiridas permanece bajo la propiedad y el control legal de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio, y será administrado por la Comunidad Católica de Gonzales y Waelder.
Restricciones:
- El cementerio está abierto durante el día para rezar y colocar flores.
- El cementerio está cerrado al tráfico vehicular, excepto durante funerales y los Días Santo de Obligación.
- El acceso peatonal al cementerio se realiza desde la calle de St. Andrew.
- Las decoraciones permitidas se limitan a flores; todas las flores deben estar en floreros aprobados. Las flores colocadas en floreros fijados permanentemente a la lápida o en un florero aprobado, a través del Programa de Floreros de Caballeros de Colón, permanecerán intactas hasta que se deterioren.
- Inscríbase en la oficina parroquial en el Programa de Floreros para Cementerios de los Caballeros de Colón, que ayuda a quienes no tienen una lápida con floreros adheridos de forma permanente. El Programa ofrece un (1) florero empotrado en el suelo para cada tumba. El florero debe ser instalado por los Caballeros de Colón y debe estar centrado y a cuarenta y dos (42) pulgadas de la lápida.
- Se prohíbe cualquier otra decoración y será retirada.
- Se prohíbe plantar arbustos, matas, o árboles.
- Se prohíbe el uso de bordillos.
- Se prohíbe la grava, la piedra triturada, y otras cubiertas vegetales.
- Las lápidas deben ser permanentes, de granito o mármol, y no deben exceder las treinta y seis (36) pulgadas de alto por cuarenta y dos (42) pulgadas de ancho y por diez y seis (16) pulgadas de profundidad. Una lápida doble no debe exceder las treinta y seis (36) pulgadas de alto por ochenta y cuatro (84) pulgadas de ancho y por diez y seis (16) pulgadas de profundidad. Se recomienda comprar una lápida con dos (2) floreros fijos permanentes.
- Se prohíben las lápidas de cualquier otro material, como cemento, metal o madera.
- Las lápidas militares, de bronce, granito o mármol, deben colocarse a nivel del suelo para facilitar el corte del césped.
- La administración del cementerio nivelará la tumba aproximadamente noventa (90) días después del entierro y quitará cualquier flor que no sea retirada por la familia.
- La Comunidad Católica de Gonzales y Waelder se encargará de cortar el césped.
- La administración de la Comunidad Católica de Gonzales y Waelder, así como los voluntarios de la iglesia que ayudan a limpiar el cementerio, se reservan el derecho de retirar las decoraciones prohibidas. Se realizarán jornadas de limpieza del cementerio para retirar todas las flores y decoraciones prohibidas dos (2) veces al año, durante los meses de marzo y octubre. Las fechas exactas se publicarán en el sitio web de la Comunidad Católica de Gonzales y Waelder.
